The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a country to the northwest of mainland Europe. It comprises of the island of Great Britain, the northeast part of the island of Irleand and many small islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. The largest island, Great Britain, is linked to France by the Channel Tunnel.

The United Kingdom is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy comprising four countries - England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - with Elizabeth II as a head of state. The UK has fourteen overseas territories, all remnants of the British Empire. It is a developed country, with the sixth largest economy in the world.

The UK hasn't got formal constitution (on a paper), but it has a package of norms. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of Parliament, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature, though several senior judges are members of the House of Lords, which is currently the highest court of the UK.
